About the Photograph
Inspired by New Orleans’ Casket Girls legend and the controlled femininity of The Handmaid’s Tale, this photograph imagines orphaned girls raised by Ursuline nuns in the manners expected of future wives. Sent to the colony to marry, they become vampiric during the crossing and are confined to the convent attic. No. 1 depicts the moment containment fails: the girls overpower the nuns and begin their escape from a future chosen for them.
