About the Photograph
Made in the aftermath of the Black Lives Matter protests, We Are Burning Inside draws from the 1811 German Coast uprising, one of the largest revolts of enslaved people in United States history. The work imagines the ghosts of the enslaved returning to the Mississippi River plantations of southeast Louisiana as a force of reckoning, setting fire to the structures that remain.
