A Storyville Menagerie

The red light district of New Orleans, called Storyville (closed in 1917) offered local photographer, EJ Bellocq a muse from which to make his work. The women who plied their trade became the subjects of his numerous portrait photographs. The faces were often scratched and age has tinted his pictures with an eerie, faded and discolored patina. Much of his work was destroyed but the few that remain appear haunting yet erotic.

“A Storyville Menagerie” depicts an invented character who has carved a modest living during a time when opportunities for women were few and even fewer for those who sought wealth and status without the arrangement of a marriage.
